To cancel the current cap and trade system without proposing a replacement does not make sense. This and the fact that the government is dropping the term "climate Change" from the the name of the Ministry of Environment and Climate change" makes it quite apparent that the government has no intention of replacement . The more sensible approach would be to develop a new approach (subject to public consultation/input) prior to cancellation.
The environmental commissioner praised the existing cap and trade system as "something that Ontarian s could be proud of". So why is it being cancelled? It was only in place for 2 years and should have been continued and tweaked as necessary to improve it. Cancellation is totally unacceptable and is a huge waste of time and money. Lawsuits arising from this will make the liberal gas plant cancellation seem puny in comparison and many business will think twice before moving to Ontario to do business. This is an incredibly backward step for Ontario.
