I am very disappointed with the short-sightedness of the proposed changes to the Greenbelt. The Greenbelt boundaries were set for a reason, to protect valuable natural areas and farmland. A 1:1 ratio for compensation is not adequate especially for wetlands. Wetlands form over hundreds, even thousands of years and require very specific geological and hydrological conditions to form. You can't pave over one wetland and dig a hole somewhere else, let it fill with water and call that a wetland. Natural areas including wetlands provide billions of dollars worth of ecosystem services that the Province isn't including on its balance sheet.
We need politicians that will stand up for future generations and protect these natural areas as intended.
We do need need more housing but it can be smart mixed use urban development, not big box stores or subdivisions.
New developments are often named after the type of habitat that was cleared to create them. But maybe they should be named after the officials that allowed that distruction to occur, like Ford's Oakridge, Piccini Woods, or Clark's Meadow.
Premier Ford, Minister Clark and Minister Piccini how would you like to be remembered?
In the coming provincial election I will be voting based on candidates environmental record and vision for a greener future.
