As a Toronto-native who now calls Eastern Ontario my home, I've always been proud of the green spaces protected by my province. Safeguarding wetlands and the dwindling amount of natural, uninhabited space is more important than ever and we need to exhaust all housing solutions before we consider touching green space.
I'm only 32 right now and similar to many of my millennial and Gen Z peers, I do not wish to bring children into an Ontario that doesn't prioritize the environment. What I don't want is to slash green space (to expand suburban sprawl). What I do want is for my province to invest in infrastructure solutions, limit the size of mcmansions and property expansions in the city. Consider the solutions used by population-dense cities around the world of similar climate and geographic limitations. Ask ourselves if our children would be proud of the decisions we are making now — I for one would be disappointed if we went in this direction.
