I am extremely concerned about the short-sightedness of Bill 23, in particular the use of Conservation Authority and greenbelt lands for development. Given the climate crisis that we are facing, it is vital that we safeguard the biodiversity found in our protected lands. Conservation authorities, wetlands and the greenbelt are also key to protecting against flooding, erosion, water table depletion and other challenges that are bound to increase as the climate changes.
I am not against development. I believe we need to invest in affordable housing, with services and infrastructure a key component of that plan (ie. access to grocery stores, schools, medical services, walkable safe neighbourhoods). Legislation should be focused on limiting sprawl, encouraging development within current urban boundaries and creating complete healthy communities on already serviced land that can be served by public transit.
I ask that Bill 23 be given significant time for both public consultation and consideration at a Standing Committee.
Thank you.
