I don't think that there is reasonable evidence to suggest that building a relatively small number of single family homes in the greenbelt will alleviate the housing affordability issues being experienced in Ontario. Those low density types of developments are not the type that need to be prioritized at the expense of environmentally sensitive areas. Furthermore, the precedent set will only increase pressure in the future to continue compromising environmentally sensitive areas.
There may be reason to believe that this has more to do with the relationship between the developers that already own the land and the Provincial government, however the fast tracking of this proposal doesn't appear to give enough time to properly scrutinize that. I was previously not inclined to think that the government would engage in questionable behavior like this, but this situation makes me very uncomfortable.
