Please read the report published by the housing affordability task force commissioned by this government regarding smart growth strategies. The report is clear in stating the best way to grow is by densifying existing built up areas within the greater golden horse shoe and that further urban sprawl is not necessary.
If this government has reasonable grounds to oppose the recommendations laid out in its housing affordability report, it would be important that the government provide evidence in order to justify destroying ecologically significant nature. Perhaps an argument could be made that we need to build into the greenbelt in order to increase housing supply but the government is yet to show evidence in support of their position.
While the housing crisis is serious, we don't address it by ignoring another crisis (climate). The greenbelt is protected because the vital role it plays in climate proofing this region. We need to strengthen nature protections, not weaken them in trying to address another issue.
P.S. It is obvious who stands to gain the most out of this amendment and isn't the people of Ontario.
