I strongly oppose the proposed removals from the Greenbelt for many reasons:
1. It is not necessary as there is plenty of space within existing municipal boundaries to accommodate population growth, if it is intensified and proper transit is built.
2. It encourages low-rise sprawl in peripheral areas, which is the most harmful form of development.
3. It fragments existing ecosystems and wildlife corridors.
4. It sends the message to developers that protected spaces are not in fact protected and are negotiable, leading to political corruption as evidenced by recent land purchases and this proposal.
5. It encourages the false narrative that development is more important than protecting nature.
The Greenbelt was meant to be a permanent initiative and it is being undermined slowly by this government.
