I strongly disagree with the proposed plan to destroy parts of the protected Greenbelt.
The government is suggesting that building on this protected land will address the housing crisis yet the massive unaffordability of housing in Ontario, the expanding numbers of people experiencing homelessness and not able to access safe shelters nor affordable homes, and the over policing of folks experiencing homelessness will not be addressed by Bill 23.
The government has already promised not to build on this land. There are very concerning questions about the motives behind the government’s decision to build this protected land. First, there are serious concerns about massive donations from developers. Second, there are serious concerns about government action to destroy land that is preserved with the intention of combating air pollution, preserving wildlife and fighting against climate change—we must question in whose interests this government is working and passing legislation.
