More homes do need to be built faster, but not at the expense of our precious Greenbelt. We have countless other options, and interrupting this tract of protected land is short-sighted and wrong-minded. The damage that this will do cannot be undone, and in this age of climate catastrophes we should be learning from mistakes of our past and not perpetuating them. Build up, build in unprotected, non-sensitive areas but please, please do not build on our Greenbelt.
Further, this change will continue creating urban sprawl, which is neither a sustainable or pleasant way to build communities. In order to meaningfully 'make homes affordable,' we need density, and there are many examples of this type of building working in other jurisdictions. Expanding the creation of the homes that will benefit from this amendment (detached, duplex, etc.) will not address the crisis for those who still cannot attain this type of housing as you need two substantial incomes for that; even if there is more housing, the average Ontarian does not make enough to afford the homes that will be built by developers out of these changes to the boundaries of the Greenbelt.
In short, these changes will both fail to solve the problem the government contends they are being made for while doing irreversible damage to our environment.
