The green belt should not be developed. This will only build homes for wealthy people without doing anything to address the affordability issues. It will also encourage more urban sprawl and destruction of vital environmental areas leading to more damage during natural disasters and tainted drinking water problems and loss of crucial farmland. Instead, we need to better develop the land already set aside for housing by building more density — building housing on top of businesses, stores, and offices, for example. We also need to improve public transit and make our urban areas more accessible and friendly for cyclists and pedestrians and people with special needs which would not be addressed by developing the green belt. Only wealthy developers would benefit from this plan.
