Schools should be permitted to participate in the municipal composting program. At this moment, students are encouraged to bring litterless lunches to school, however, a great deal of unavoidable food waste (apple cores, banana peels, etc) are still being placed in the garbage because students (in high school) do not carry them back home.
If we want to instill in students the fact that composting and proper waste reduction and disposal are necessary life skills--as well as are lifetime responsibilities as humans--we need to support this by providing the facilities at schools.
We also would benefit from providing the same commercial style waste sorting bins that are used in municipal recreation facilities and shopping malls-- for consistency as well as for optics-- waste reduction is as important at school as it is elsewhere in the community.
Thanks for the opportunity to participate.
