As a citizen of Ontario, I am horrified and devastated by the proposed changes in Bill 23 to the Greenbelt. It is moving us in the exact opposite direction that I believe we need to be moving in. In this era of climate change and increased ecological devastation, we need to prioritize protecting our wetlands, green spaces, ALL ecosystems that we can possibly protect.
If we do not do this, we will continue to pay in significant ways for our failures through loss of biodiversity, the well being of wildlife that need an intact greenbelt, lower air and water quality, not to mention the high cost of responding the the increasingly devastating weather events caused by our changing climate.
We should not be paving over protected spaces and "trading" these lands shows a callous disregard for ecological integrity and is a sham.
We are at such a critical juncture in the survival of the human species and our complete destruction of the earth's delicately balanced systems. We need leadership taking us in the opposite direction than the Ford government is proposing with this bill.
