My view is the Ford government is seriously eroding democracy by forcing through Bill 23 when the following will be adversely impacted now and in the future:
1) sets a terrible and dangerous precedent for reserving green space and farm land today and in the future by compromising the Greenbelt which we can never restore;
2) the environmental impact of urban sprawl is huge. Have we learned nothing about coping/adapting to the climate crisis; More highways and vehicles burning fossil fuels cannot be offset; again this is Canada not doing its part. Shame on this government!
3) this is not the way to help with the housing crisis. There are much better ways as recommended by the special task force earlier this year which densify the GTA. Why is the government not pursuing these? We need our leaders to look in the mirror to recognize they are the roadblock/key obstacle to allowing more urban density on single family zoned land. It's so obvious that not doing taking this approach suggests willful intent to favour higher income citizens over those who have not gratuitously benefitted from rising real estate prices over the past 30 years. We are saying to renters and those trying to find affordable housing, "you don't matter to us nearly as much as those with real estate wealth". The younger generation will remember this.
