The title of Bill 23 should be changed to “Never let a good crisis go to waste - more money for developers, more property tax for all Ontarian's Act”
The Standing Committee on Bill 23 went out of its way not to hear from a wide range of parties who would have raised critical issues with the act... yet the Committee had time to hear from the Concrete Producers. The government clearly doesn’t want to listen to anyone other then developers, who are set to profit from the act.
The government needs to stop Bill 23 from becoming law as written. The government needs to heed the advice of the responses provided by many stakeholders, including but not limited to:
- The City of Mississauga
- The Region of Peel
- York Region
- The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO)
- The Association of Municipal Clerks, Treasurers, and Municipal Officers (AMCTO)
- Municipal Finance Officers Association
- Parks and Recreation Ontario (PRO)
- Hemson Consulting
- Registered Nurses Association of Ontario
- Canadian Environmental Law Association
- Ontario Nature
- Ontario’s Conservation Authorities
...and many, many, many more voices of concern.
If the government passes this Bill as is it is my sincere hope that every municipality in Ontario, when it issues property tax bills in the coming years, includes a line that reads “Doug Ford Government Tax” for all of the lost DC revenue that is going to land on the property owning residents and businesses of Ontario.
