This is a terrible proposal and should be abandoned. Land swaps mean the end of the Greenbelt. If this proposal goes through it will increase land speculation, drive up costs and seriously harm farming all across Southern Ontario. Municipalities, farmers and developers will no longer have certainty about land use planning, it just creates a constant drive to expand urban boundaries and increase sprawl and all the costs associated with that form of development.
There is more than enough land to meet the regions housing needs without building in the Greenbelt - the government's own Housing Affordability Task Force confirmed this just last year. The proposals will therefore not help solve the housing affordability challenge, but they definitely will cause an awful lot of harm. The government should focus its efforts on implementing the recommendations from the Housing Affordability that will actually make a difference.
This proposal is bad for residents, transportation, commuters, communities, farmers, municipal finances, biodiversity, climate mitigation and climate adaptation.
The government has promised in consecutive elections to protect the Greenbelt. This proposal breaks that promise.
