The Greenbelt is supposed to be an instrument to regulate land use and growth in a sustainable way. The modification of its boundaries is only detrimental, both for the environment and for the building of new houses which would not quality buildings but only speculation undertaken by big companies.
The modification of the greenbelt boundaries could be only the first step towards its complete destruction.
Moreover, the Greenbelt is a powerful instrument to protect and politicized a productive countryside, which is a profoundly territorialized space, where the local (urban and non-urban) life is materially and symbolically produced and reproduced daily. With its destruction, all the daily dynamics that regulate life outside sprawling suburbs could be erased in name of a supposed development of any quality.
