I oppose this plan to open up the green belt for development in a so called "land swap". The green belt was established with the intention that it would be untouchable land - land that exists for the enjoyment and protection of future generations, such as from flooding.
A land shortage is not the cause of this housing crisis. To imply so in the second largest country in the world with an extremely low population density is ridiculous.
A shortage of single family homes is not the cause of this housing crisis. These homes aren't affordable for those currently excluded from the housing market. Sprawl will not save us, it will only hurt the environment and continue to systemically exclude a class of people from accessing housing.
This is a dangerous precedent to set. What will stop the green belt from being open again? And again? I oppose this idea and call on Doug Ford and his government to backstep, as they did only a few years ago, and respect the green belt. I call on this government to respect his promise to never touch the green belt.
