People largely opposed opening up the green belt for development during elections and we had been promised by this government this would'nt happen. I believe the quote was "the people have spoken". Obviously, that was not the truth and this government is going to do what it wants without listening to the people vs greedy developers that are just looking to profit off the land. I am from Ancaster and back onto this greenbelt, as well as farmland that the community has largely voted not to build on. Our city is currently being bullied by the Ontario government without running a thorough analysis that this plan would solve a housing crisis and the affect this would have on the environment. People can't afford these single family homes, especially when developers for these homes require a hefty down payment. How does the government plan to make these homes cheap for people that are not in the upper class? Inflation and interest rates are high, meaning supplies needed to build will be expensive and mortgages being unattainable for most people. With this bill, who is paying for the infrastructure? It doesn't look like developers are and the city will be on the hook. Won't that force cuts to city programs and increase property taxes that people already struggle to afford? Won't that contribute to the housing crisis further? This bill is disappointing and shows that it doesn't matter, cash is king and the developers win. As always, the people and environment lose.
