I am extremely outraged, disappointed and saddened, but not surprised, by this recent move by the Ford government to trump rights and democratic voices, and go back on promises that were made to the public about the Ontario Greenbelt lands in favor of cronyism and developer profit. I am gobsmacked that this government would make this irresponsible move to allow development of the protected, environmentally sensitive Greenbelt during a global climate crisis on the heels of their decision to remove environmental authority input and oversight in land use and development. The proposed amendments to the Greenbelt Plan have nothing to do with creating affordable housing for Ontarians and newcomers and everything to do with paying back Ontario PC developer donors. If this PC government was truly concerned with creating affordable housing they would focus on increasing affordable housing requirements in new developments and strengthen rental replacement programs.
Like with Bill 28, Ontarians are speaking out against the blatant abuses of power by the Ford government. The collective, informed voices of Ontarians will not be silenced. Please respect Ontarians, our children’s future and our productive green spaces and reverse this decision!
