The greenbelt exists for the dual purposes of protecting ecologically important land as well as acting as a physical check on urban sprawl.

Enabling developers to build more single family homes on former greenbelt lands will primarily serve to enrich developers. The individuals living in these new locations will have poor transit options. Outlying municipalities will have fewer residents and most will continue to suffer with poor regional transit options.

If additional housing is needed then the focus should be on funding densification around transit hubs as well as improving regional transit options to make living beyond the greenbelt more attractive.
