Hi, I'm a grade 7 student in Toronto and this is what I believe should happen with the Greenbelt.
The Greenbelt is an amazing area of protected land that helps with our environment, habitat, and the people of Ontario. The Greenbelt in Ontario is the largest one in the world and I, and many people want to keep it that way. We need it to keep our environment healthy. The land provides areas for farmers to grow fresh crops for Ontarians and with all the trees in the area, the air is much fresher there. Taking out a piece of the Greenbelt will affect the rest of the protected land. I know that the government says he will build 50,000 more homes to help Ontario's housing crisis, that could be a good thing. I think it might help some people to have new homes but the homes will still cost more money than to rent an apartment. Which means many people still will not be able to afford them. I understand that the government will replace the land taken out with the same amount of land or even more, but if the land is not connected to the Ontario Greenbelt then that new land is not considered part of the Greenbelt. Also, some of the parts of the new land that will be added to the Greenbelt are already protected. For example the 13 urban river valleys. Taking land away from the Greenbelt breaks the promise that the government made in 2005 to keep the Greenbelt always protected. As a grade 7 student and for other students even younger, that teaches us that breaking promises for money is ok.
Overall the Greenbelt is very important to all Ontarians and we must keep it protected. I hope that this paragraph informs you of the importance of the Greenbelt.
Thank you
Sincerely a grade 7 student
