While I agree the we need to build more affordable housing in Ontario, and do it in a streamline manner. It is absolutely NOT necessary to build further into the Greenbelt. The Greenbelt plays an important role to maintain the overall health, economic and environmental security of the people of Ontario.
It is a falsehood that we need to open up the Greenbelt in order to build the amount of homes needed to ease pressures of housing insecurity for Ontario residence of today and the future. There is more than enough underused land to facilitate building the communities we desperately need.
Sprawl is NOT the answer. Ontario needs to help municipalities optimize their existing land by updating zoning to include more dense development, with mid-rise, mixed use, high rise and walkable neighbourhoods close to amenities and public transport. We have already tried the sprawl model of development and it has failed, and continues to fail residents and communities. It's a complete waste of resources to back this type of development when there is so much existing infrastructure that can be optimized.
Save the Greenbelt. Re-imagine the "Yellowbelt".
Thank you,
-Filip
