Plans to develop into the greenbelt are short sighted and greedy.

Honestly, the lands already set aside are insufficient to support the health of our ecosystems, future communities, and province as a whole. But they hold some small promise of a tolerable future.

As climate chaos begins to kick off around the globe, including close to home in North America, any sort of plans to develop the greenbelt are incredibly tone deaf.

Even setting aside the value of preserving natural land (large amounts of uninterrupted land are crucial to support species diversity), we humans need this stretch of wild land as a carbon sink.

We need these firm boundaries to keep our province from gradually turning into an urban wasteland, vulnerable to the whims of nature (eg flooding during storms bc of excessive paving). The harm done if these developments pass will be permanent, and set precedent for further erosion of protected natural lands.

There are many examples of government decisions that put profit (often short term) over people and planet. But I thought at least the greenbelt was untouchable.

This really, deeply concerns me.
