I am totally appalled that the Conservative Government of Ontario is proposing to withdraw from the Cap and Trade program adopted for Ontario. The billion dollars that have been collected in the fund so far to invest in renewable projects must not be directed to other non climate action programs. This includes winding down of the program!
Ontario has been a leader in reducing its carbon footprint and I am ashamed that the new Ontario government has reneged on its responsibility to do what was committed to and what is right for the environment.
Furthermore, there has been no plan announced to tackle this most pressing issue of our time. The short sightedness of the government is remarkable. How can it not see that the amount of money that will be spent to clean up after climate disasters will far outweigh what is required to make polluters pay and try and mitigate disastrous climate change.
I want the Ontario Government to take responsibility for a plan that will put us on track to meet our Paris Climate commitment.
I want the Ontario Government to invest in the growing clean energy sector which has the opportunity to create jobs in a multi trillion $ economy.
I want the Ontario Government to establish a target with legally binding commitments, to be powered by 100% clean energy by 2050.
I want the Ontario Government to show leadership in this issue instead of dragging us back decades to a time of reckless and unaccountable behaviour.
