What a horrible, terrible proposition. The Greenbelt is meant to protect land that is vital to our headwaters, to our food production.... we CANNOT keep sprawling. Every single expert knows this. And yet this government thinks it can benefit from a loophole in the Greenbelt Act and do a land swap. I cannot even begin to tell you how angry this makes me. If this goes forward I will NOT be voting for my currently-Conservative MPP (Peterborough-Kawartha - MPP Dave Smith). This is exactly the sort of move that makes citizens jaded about democracy. And, by the way, THIS WILL ONLY INCREASE TAXES AND COSTS for people (AKA what the Premier refers to at "TAXPAYERS")! Building infrastructure is expensive! Transportation is expensive! Dealing with floods is expensive! This is clearly nepotism at its finest. The ONLY people this benefits are a few developer buddies. THIS WILL NOT SOLVE THE HOUSING CRISIS. If you want to do that, we need MORE INFILL, NOT MORE SPRAWL. We need to keep our greenspaces green; they provide vital ecosystem services that we need. We need water retention to mitigate against flooding (which is only going to increase with climate change). There is nothing Conservative about this government - they're just forcing more costs on us down the line. WE HAVE LAND AVAILABLE TO BUILD -- WE DO NOT NEED TO BUILD IN THE GREENBELT. What a short-sighted, ignorant thing to propose.
