The decision by this government to allow development on previously protected Greenbelt lands is deplorable. The land in question is environmentally sensitive, a valuable flood plain and home to thousands of wildlife species, some of which are at risk or considered endangered.
The Provincial government, after years of offloading responsibilities to Municipal governments is now overturning municipal decisions to freeze development. These new developments require infrastructure and will be a significant burden to tax payers.
In a time of a global environmental and climate crisis, we do not need urban sprawl. There are development options within the GTA that would do far less harm and actually be a solution for those truly in need of homes.
This decision benefits one group, developers.
Sadly, this Premiere's word means nothing, and this reckless and shortsighted decision is not in the interest of the people of Ontario.
