I oppose the proposal to limit affordable units to 5% of the total number of units in buildings erected near protected major transit station areas. I also oppose the limiting of the timeframe for which these units must be affordable to 25 years.
These lower limits make no sense when 'Everyone in Ontario should be able to find a home that is right for them. But too many people are struggling with the rising cost of living and with finding housing that meets their family’s needs.'
I totally agree that 'too many people are struggling with the rising cost of living and with finding housing that meets their family’s needs.' The logical decision then is to INCREASE the current minimum number of affordable units in each of these buildings so that MORE families can find the affordable housing they need. Especially since families struggling to pay their rent also need to be near transit stations to get to work.
If we want urban centres to thrive, we need to make housing affordable for the people we want to work in our cities. We need to lower the burden on health care by making it easier for families to live near their workplaces without worrying constantly about how they are going to afford to eat properly.
The government needs to make regulations that make it EASIER for people to find affordable homes, not harder.
