It is naive to believe that Ontario can go forward for very long without a carbon pollution tax of some kind. Even if the Canadian government were to not impose one, it is likely that other economies will eventually penalize trade with Ontario for the lack of such. EnviroEconomics for Canadians for Clean Prosperity has released a study indicating that pricing carbon as planned by the Canadian Government will likely result in financial benefits to many Canadians and reduce carbon emissions. If the current Ontario Government does not like Cap and Trade, then it should design that which it would consider to be a better tax model. If it considers those monies collected to be a "cash grab", then it should refund it to Ontario citizens. The presence of a "price on carbon" is a market action and those that become more efficient will earn more, as should happen in a free market. The Canadian Government has permitted the provinces to design the system that benefits them. It is incumbent upon the Ontrario Government to act responsibly and take advantage of that. Taking action now will be less painful that delaying action through inaction. It will make companies stronger in the long run and likely not hurt them very much in the short run. Unless you wait until the initial tax has to be very high.
