Greenbelt (Golden Horseshoe)
The Greenbelt is a permanently protected area of green space, farmland, forests, wetlands, and watersheds, located in Southern Ontario, Canada
The Greenbelt safeguards the vital resources that clean our air and water, reduces our flood risks, provides a home for wildlife, and ensures our communities have green space to explore.

Everyone agrees that Ontario needs to build more homes, and to do it quickly. But that certainly doesn’t justify the way the Ford government plans to open up the Greenbelt - there are other options - build up instead of out!!.

The Ford government plan allows the government to remove about 7,400 acres in 15 different areas from the Greenbelt, which has been protected from development by legislation since 2005. Premier Doug Ford had previously promised many times that he wouldn’t touch the protected lands and yet here matters stand.

With this betrayal and ‘about face’ on the matter I agree with Phil Pothen, Ontario Environment Program Manager, Environmental Defence that “this government is using rhetoric about housing as a pretext to do things that will deliver no more housing, but they will put the money in the pockets of people who own particular chunks of land”.

Given all underlying facts uncovered by concerned Ontario residents, the stench coming from this is too strong to ignore. I join with the environmental groups in calling on the province to repeal Bill 23.
