The addition of 50,000 new homes is not worth the irreversible loss for 7,000,000 people in the Greater Golden Horseshoe of agricultural food security, drinking water quality, and cost-effective flood prevention. Higher population density builds more homes than urban sprawl, while also creating government budget surplus.
Ontario needs to keep farmlands, as proven by food as a national security issue during the pandemic and Ukraine war. Even though land added to the Greenbelt is greater than the land removed under this proposal, it should be about quality instead of quantity of the land.
As the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing said in February 2021, Ontario needs to "protect more environmental, groundwater and agriculture resources from development."
