I totally oppose your plan to remove lands from the Greenbelt — on ethical, environmental, logical and (numerous other) grounds:
1) It is a betrayal of Premier Ford’s promise to the people of Ontario to “NOT touch the Greenbelt.”
2) The government-hired consultant’s own report stated Greenbelt land was not needed for housing. Why are you not heeding your own experts?
3) Building on Greenbelt land (un-serviced as it is, with no basic infrastructure in place) is no way to even begin to approach the unaffordable housing problem — and certainly will not solve it!
It makes no sense!
4) These lands were designated as part of the Greenbelt based on extensive scientific studies and public consultation. To simply carve holes in it defies science, logic and environmental stewardship.
It is irresponsible!
5) The lame attempts being made to ‘justify’ land parcel removals — by ‘adding’ already protected river valleys or land in the Paris Galt Moraine — lack any sort of scientific or logical justification.
6) Ontario’s Greenbelt warrants permanent protection of its status quo at least — with possible ‘enhancement’ additions ... never deletions! It is a ‘system.’
7) Removing Greenbelt lands would have nothing but negative impacts: Loss of farmland (food security), green infrastructure benefits, natural habitat (including that of endangered species); and even worse ‘commuter’ traffic congestion in the Greater Golden Horseshoe for future generations.
8) What Ontario needs is intensification — building up, not out — to create more compact complete communities serviced by many types of transit. You know this and yet present this plan? Shameful!
9) This bizarre plan to plunder the Greenbelt? Is obvious in its intent — to enable wealthy donor developers to get even wealthier — at extreme cost to Ontario tax payers and our natural heritage.
At a time when my faith in government is hanging by a thread? THIS scheme hits rock bottom!
If you have any conscience or ethics ... You will push to have it DROPPED — as a misguided mistake which (upon reflection) has obvious risk of “unintended consequences.”
