This proposal is completely unnecessary. There is more than enough land and intensification opportunities in the entire GTA to accommodate the proposed influx of immigrants and more than enough land and intensification opportunities for additional housing to accommodate all those people for decades to come. Encroachment into the Greenbelt is completely unnecessary and incredibly shortsighted. The protection of the Greenbelt lands is paramount to the survival of the increased populations within the urban areas of the GTA by way of protecting water resources and farmland. Farmland in the proposed areas of encroachment is mainly Class 1 - the very best and productive soils in Canada. This land must be protected for farming. It will be the most important resource for the people in the urban areas. Once built on, it can never be used for farming again.
As a retired Rural Planner, I am vehemently opposed to the encroachment of low density urban housing into the Greenbelt. Please do, however, add the additional proposed areas into the Greenbelt. These will be important to future populations in the urban areas as it will preserve water resources and farmland.
