I am writing to express my opposition to this legislation.
It directly contradicts the promise made by the premier in 2018. This erodes public trust in elected officials and government.
It impedes on limited and valuable agricultural land. This has an economic impact on local, rural economies and presents a further challenge to the food security issues that were highlighted during the pandemic.
Loss of development charges place a further burden on municipalities struggling to cover the cost of infrastructure to cover growth.
I am aware of the need for additional and affordable housing, but support growing up, rather than out, by increasing density and reclaiming unused and underused land within existing urban areas.
Expanded housing into protected areas not only reduces the greenspace that helps counteract climate change, the resulting sprawl encourages further reliance on vehicle traffic exacerbates emissions.
I encourage the province to reconsider this decision and to work with its municipal and federal partners toward sustainable housing planning.
