I am outraged that the Ontario government is cancelling the cap and trade agreement. This will be a huge hit to not only our provincial budget, make us on the hook for billions of dollars to buy back permits or else we will get sued, but it signals to the rest of the international community that we are not a world-class city that is ready to stand together in the fight against climate change. This funding went towards necessary programs that helped drive us towards our previously agreed upon carbon goals. Cap and trade has been proven again and again by different studies to be an effective means to lower carbon emissions. Rather than viewing this as an additional tax burdening the lower income and impoverished taxpayers of Ontario, our provincial government should be looking at how to effectively spend that money on bridging the gap and help make energy security available to those in need! Tax everyone and take the money to help those who need it. Help those who need help to creatively lower their energy consumption and their energy bills, while challenging the highest polluters to find innovative ways through research and development on how to lower their energy spending.
Please don't make Toronto the laughingstock and embarrassment of the entire Scientific and International community. Show that we have the creativeness, passion and intelligence to solve this problem and be a true role model to cities around the world.
