It is my belief that a predictable, transparent and scheduled program must be established in order to assist Ontario businesses and residents transition towards a zero emission economy. A transition to a zero emission economy was agreed to by Canada and 195 other countries in the 2015 Paris Agreement, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has indicated such a transition must take place before 2050 in order to keep global temperature rise to below 2 degrees. It is important that Ontario's transition be scheduled and transparent in order to allow businesses and residents to make the needed technological and behavioural changes towards reducing emissions, while minimizing the costs associated with such reductions. As placing a price on carbon has been identified as a critical component of emissions reduction I strongly request that the Ontario government re-establish the cap and trade system or establish another mechanism for placing a price on carbon - a carbon tax is the only other means that I am aware of. Ontario's response to climate change should be consistent with the values of its residents, which includes a commitment to prosperity and sustainability for all peoples and all generations - please make it so.
