I am not in favour of opening up the greenbelt for development.
Developing houses on the greenbelt land will not help with the housing crisis. Only the lowest density, most expensive housing (single family homes) will be developed on that land. To deal with the housing crisis, we need to focus on building high density, more affordable housing options that are near to existing public transit. It is obvious that building houses on the greenbelt land will increase urband sprawl, ultimately make developers rich, and do little for the people affected by the housing crisis.
In addition, greenbelts are shown to lower air temperature, increase relative humidity, and improve air quality. We require our greenbelt to help mitigate the effects of climate change in urban areas.
