I am highly disappointed that the government is amending the Greenbelt plan to remove protections on existing lands. The government previously committed to not swapping or adding additional Greenbelt lands in exchange for removing existing lands.
Rather than spending taxpayer funds that harm the environment in pursuit of short-term gain, we should invest in the long-term ecological well-being of Ontario. Our ecologically sensitive areas should be guarded, especially regarding climate change. Instead, the money should be spent on increasing affordable, higher-density housing paired with rapid transit systems to prevent sprawl.
This plan is just one way the Government is also attempting to harm the environment and promote low-density housing, such as through the proposed highway 413. Adding a new 400 series highway is not necessary when highway 407 is currently underutilized. The construction of the highway would not ease gridlock due to induced demand. I would rather see funding be spent on high-speed rail to connect southern Ontario.
