This Bill is going to set Conservation efforts back decades and cause irreparable harm to ecologically important areas. Homes can be built elsewhere, and I am extremely disappointed that this government is taking such a shortsighted view of the environment.
This Bill is making me reconsider my decision in the party I supported last election. I cannot support a party who is pushing a Bill that supports:
Removing my right to appeal planning decisions, and removing the requirement for public meetings about some planning decisions.
Undermining the power of Conservation Authorities to regulate development that affects wetlands and other water bodies in their watershed negatively.
Changing how Provincially Significant Wetlands are identified - so much so that very few wetlands would count as provincially significant any more.
An offsetting policy for developers to pay into that would “compensate” for destroying natural habitats. Offsetting policies like these have been proven to be ineffective and I’m unsure why my government would choose to implement this.
I am incredibly disappointed in this government’s decision to push this bill forward. This is a very shortsighted, narrow minded Bill and I cannot support something that so blatantly disregards the importance of the environment for nearsighted gains.
