I am extremely concerned about Doug Ford revoking his promises to not touch The Greenbelt. It was established for many reasons, including flood mitigation, preservation of drinking water for the GTA and protection of critical habitat for many species at risk. Most of Southern Ontario has been developed over the past centuries, so any protected area are absolutely essential to preserve biodiversity for future generations to enjoy.
I am also concerned about the manner in which development was decided. Ford and his fellow conservatives refuse to listen to experts and want to rush through development, which takes significant time to plan and execute. How is it that developers were buying Greenbelt Land prior to the land being made available by Ford? These properties would be terrible investments for a developer when they were protected as Greenbelt land and would serve little purpose to them. Why would they not buy land that was actually able to be developed? It seems like there was a lot of insider information being traded between the Premier and his developer friends. They can get these lands far cheaper than they would have been now under Ford's new legislation. This doesn't seem fair to other Ontarians. I feel that it should be investigated as Ford's "insider trading" cannot possibly be legal.
The reality is that we only have one environment, one Earth. If we destroy our land there is no other option. We need to protect areas like the Greenbelt and consider sustainable development options that can preserve Ontario for the present and future.
