Removing lands from the Greenbelt for housing development seems to go against the very reasons for this protection. We must protect our farmland and integrity of natural systems. Greenfield development makes irreparable impact and loss to these assets.
A growing population also means a need to have more food-growing capacity. This is some of the best food-growing land in the continent.
Agriculture and agri-food can mean jobs and economic output. Why pave and segment these assets? You hinder the capacity by segmenting it.
We as a whole need to think more creatively about housing solutions. Sprawl is not the way.
We need more mid-density, mixed-use communities. I grew up in the GTA where I had to drive most places. My family has now lived for 15+ years in walkable and transit based communities and quality of life is much better, even if my personal residence is smaller.
I am a future home-buyer. I won't be looking at homes built on the Greenbelt.
