I’m appalled at the passing of bill 23 and associated measures, for many reasons.
Building on valuable farmland, wetlands and greenbelt does not solve the problem of insufficient, affordable housing. It will increase sprawl, carbon emissions and climate emergencies. And increase the profits of wealthy developers, who will no doubt decide to build pricey single family dwellings, rather than affordable housing.
There are much better solutions, for example: infilling and intensification within cities, converting massive mall parking lots, at least, in part into high rise affordable apartments etc.
As well, municipalities will lose much of the revenue they currently receive from development charges, so presumably municipal taxpayers will have to come up with the difference so that the necessary infrastructure is built to service these new communities. This is blatantly unfair.
