It's disenguous to suggest that the housing crisis can be fixed by allowing granny tiny homes to be built in the backyard, which is basically what this is about. The MAJOR issue in terms of availability and affordability is the number of housing units (houses, small multiple unit homes like duplexes, etc, condo apartments and townhouses that are owned for investment purposes, bought by or held by developers to rent at considerable profit, or bought by those who wish to use the units as AirBnb or similar income generators. If the Province would pass a law that basically stated, 'If you buy a residence intended for sale (as opposed to buildings purpose built as rental units), you or your family must live in that residence, or it will be forfeited to the municipality' that might actually help alleviate much of the strain on the system. A second cause of the current housing crisis today has been generated by developers driving up the costs of affordable houses in order to buy and tear down the existing building to build something more expensive and profitable on the land. If the Province would pass a law that prohibited developers from undertaking this kind of land and housing speciulation for profit purposes, again far more residences would be available for the general public at more reasonable costs. It's not ordinary taxpayers who made this mess, but this would make them pay the costs of greater profits for developers.
