We should scrap Bill 23 and implement real solutions: increase low-rise residential density. Affordable housing near transit and NOT near or on greenbelts is the real solution. Developers can dodge affordability requirements by building outside transit zones. Bill 23 will not supply family friendly housing near transit, where reductions of car use would be a real financial benefit to families, and reduce green house gases. The government says we have a housing shortage but there are many empty spaces within towns and cities that could be utilized without the need to build on the Greenbelt and other environmentally sensitive areas as well as farmland, needed for future generations.
The Conservative legacy in Ontario is in jeopardy. Well in fact, I predict it is precariously close to irretrievable. Our province can increase housing supply and affordability, while making efficient use of our urban infrastructure, scarce fiscal resources, and precious natural capacity to protect against climate change. Government needs to craft thoughtfully policies that create the right incentives for housing supply and affordability and also protect our green spaces, leaving these areas intact for future generations. This would take real leadership and sadly at present we do not have this in Ontario. Developers seem to be the winners not families, nor future generations that are being betrayed.
