The cancellation of the cap and trade program along with the Low Carbon Economy and Climate Change Mitigation Act was abrupt and did not allow time for subject matter experts and the public and Indigenous groups to be consulted. This last-ditch effort, after 2 readings in the legislature- for consultation is not adequate. The cap and trade program was successful. It was not a ‘punishing carbon tax’ but rather an economic tool to allow the market place to address carbon emissions. An approach one might believe aligns with fiscal conservative thinking. Certainly, information coming out of conservative think tanks suggest that economic tools to solve large scale environmental problems are an effective and efficient approach. I do not approve of the cancellation of cap and trade nor the approach taken by government. In order to strengthen Bill 4, it must contain measurable targets for emissions reductions and rules in place to ensure compliance.
