All the proposals have merit! However if we will see a dramatic decline in qualified personnel over the next five years I suggest the following. In conjunction with the proposals I suggest that we take full advantage of the experience that we are about to lose. Those who pass the test should have to spend 6-12 months being mentored as an apprentice by a currently certified mature building inspector. This mentor will be required to log time spent and assigned duties assisting the mentor. The mentors compensation may need to reflect this voluntary duty. The best education is hands on with over site. Don’t let the current brain trust retire without first benefitting from their experience. As a retired construction manager I now do plenty of training and mentoring and so should those who will be leaving the inspection trade. Most trades have apprenticeship programs to ensure skills are passed on and so should building inspectors. Quite often there are tricks to the trade that books cannot teach.
