I strongly disagree with this Government's plan to enact Bill 4 and cancel the only climate change policy Ontario has. The Ford government did not win the election on a mandate to repeal all climate policies and fight the Federal government on carbon taxation. Research is clear that putting a price on carbon is a necessary and vital requirement to change consumer and industry behavior to reduce carbon emissions. This government keeps repeating the mantra that carbon taxation "costs taxpayers" - but doing nothing about climate change will cost taxpayers much, much more - including increased extreme weather events, flooding, wildfires, insurance claims, and impacts on the global environment that sustains us. It is morally bankrupt of us to think we can continue carbon emissions "business as usual" with no plans to curb our pollution.
We must put a price on pollution, and return the revenues to the pockets of Ontarians to lower their carbon footprint. I want legally binding emissions targets in line with our obligations to the Paris Climate Agreement. I want Ontario to be 100% powered by clean energy by 2050. I want Ontario to end subsidies and handouts for fossil fuel companies and redirect this money to clean energy solutions.
The world is transitioning - must transition - to a renewable energy economy. This Government is showing the world that it wants to miss out on the $26 trillion clean energy economy by signalling that renewables investment is not welcome in Ontario.
How can this Government ignore the scientific reports showing that we must act NOW on climate change? Climate change is an existential threat to humanity and cannot be ignored. I strongly disagree with the misinformation this Government is repeating in the media, and its action to repeal all existing climate change policies with no plan in place to replace them.
Cancel Bill 4 and ACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE NOW.
Thank you,
