Municipalities receive concerns from residents with respect to the use of lakes for overnight accommodations on waterbodies. This is becoming an increasing concern in tourist communities with several lakes.
The proposed amendments to clarify the types of structures/boats which can be used for overnight camping on water will address some of the concerns being raised including wastewater and sewage treatment, refuge, emergency services and short-term accommodations. It will limit the camping on structures/boats not designed for that purpose.
We are disappointed to see the removal of some of the provisions including the reduction in the number of days, prohibit camping on water within 300 metres of a developed shoreline, specify conditions for swim rafts, heat loops, etc. There are often concerns raised by residents about this as well, including excessive noise, privacy concerns, pollution, safety, etc. We are hoping these will be raised in the future under another process.
