On behalf of myself, my children and all future Ontarians, I reject the proposed. On the basis that many mine sites Canada-wide have never been truly reclaimed even with the best-proposed closure plans. It is imperative that a plan be in place rather than dig first, try to repair later. Environmental impacts of mining are not something that is short-lived. I work directly in the environmental testing industry for mine sites. The impacts of tailing waste is not to be trifled with. Unexpected leachate chemicals such as SO4 and heavy metals are extremely destructive in ecosystems. To allow a mining company to have no foresight is not only lazy but downright irresponsible. Government regulations are in place to provide accountability rather than allow the exploitation that is driven by the chase of profits. As the old adage goes “only when the last tree has died and the last river poisoned will we realize we cannot eat money”.
