I am just a regular citizen, and tax payer of Ontario, who has been watching the dire news about climate for nearly 20 years. As an informed non scientist, I believe that we are running out of time for sustaining a habitable planet. The change process is accelerating, and soon enough, we will have a problem growing food. We'll also start having issues paying for recovery from various odd storms and fires. The melting arctic permafrost is adding to the positive feedback loop that is making the planet warm up faster. Do not get deceived by the fact that we still get snow, or it's still cold sometimes. The focus needs to be on what the generic global trend is. We have changed the chemistry of the air to levels unknown to human kind. Very few living plants and animals may be able to adapt, and most, including us, will not be able to make it. As it stands now, we'll still see lots of refugees in the upcoming decades trying to get into our country, and we should realize that desperate people will do desperate things. It will be much more expensive and morally dubious to simply deter people that don't have a livable environment because of climate change. I also don't think we can defend ourselves if US decides that they need the Great Lakes for themselves, 20 years from now. We need to believe that our children have a future. I have a very hard time thinking about that. I personally don't believe they have much of a future, and it breaks my heart. It is very hard to see the news, and watch another policy related to curbing emissions going away. I don't think it's good or realistic, or possible to turn back the time to fossil fuels. We need to act now to ensure our children can live in a civil society, and not one overwhelmed with calamity and chaos. We need planning for the future of human kind really badly. Please make informed decisions that help us prevail. We cannot wake up in the morning and be productive citizens if we are hopeless. There is an old saying that everyone understands: "if you want to make an omelet, you have to break some eggs", so it follows, "if we want a future, we need to make some changes and we need them NOW". According to thousands of studies on climate change, we have no time for any delay, and need drastic change right now. True leadership goes beyond the 4 year voting cycle. Please see the links below for some evidence supporting my claims.
