As an Ontarian and a parent, I strongly object to the proposed Cap and Trade Cancellation Act, a program that was showing results. Ontario's greenhouse gas emissions declined form 2005 to 2016. The money collected under this program was providing badly needed infrastructure funds for projects tied to retrofit and sustainability programs in the health care and transit sectors. Money that made real tangible impacts on our GHG emissions.
I have no problem with our elected governments changing and updating legislation to meet the needs of the province, but in this case, the program is being cancelled without an alternative being presented to the electorate. Dr. Dianne Saxe, Ontario's environmental commissioner stated in her Greenhouse Gas Project Report that the government's plan promises “undetermined action to achieve undetermined and easily changed targets at some undetermined future time, with no criteria or consequences.” Please keep Cap and Trade until you have developed a viable option.
